W. M. Jordan Company provided Construction Management at Risk Services for a new free-standing 3-story, 66,267 square foot Medical Office Building in a “Sports Neighborhood” in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The new center is modeled after other existing community-based CHKD health centers, but is focused primarily on providing care for sports related medical issues. The facility features an Urgent Care Center, pediatric outpatient services, lab draw and processing, diagnostic lab and imaging services with X-ray, MRI, and ultrasound, a sports medicine clinic, outdoor therapy area, family resource center, meeting rooms and a sports rehabilitation and performance gymnasium.

CHKD emphasized the importance of physical activity, waste reduction, healthy materials, and daylight access. The design features abundant daylight and exterior views. Day-lit staircases filled with artwork encourage stair use. Low-emitting building materials, furniture, and low-allergy, climate-appropriate landscaping accommodates allergy-clinic patients.

A kid-friendly, interactive dashboard in the lobby educates families with information about the building’s energy and water use in real time. The building met CHKD’s goals, achieving 37% indoor water savings, 50% irrigation savings, and 35% energy savings over a traditional building.

The CHKD Landstown Center Way project was the first in Virginia to meet LEED® 4.0 requirements. Sustainable features include water efficient plumbing fixtures, high quality glazing and curtain wall systems, and HVAC displacement ventilation. The building was designed to have lower energy requirements, water efficient plumbing and many more features that will lower its carbon footprint.
