W. M. Jordan Company and P.M.A. Architects donated their professional services to restore a 248-year old building to its original state as a gift to the community.

A sea captain named Herbert and his four sons built the original home in 1757. Located near Blue Water Marina, it is near the place that Blackbeard had his head staked out and where the headstone of this pirate's grave was found.

The Herbert House is the second oldest house on the Peninsula and one of the finest examples of brickwork in Virginia. Four existing windows date from the 1750's and were built as the original brick walls went up.

Blue Water Yacht Sales donated the land to the Herbert House Foundation. The Foundation owns the building, and the City of Hampton History Museum operates the facility. The home is filled with nautical pieces representative of the historical period from 1700 through the War of 1812. The Lawson family donated many of the artifacts from their private collection.
