Renaissance Academy

Virginia Beach, Virginia
City of Virginia Beach Public Schools
RRMM Architects
290,000 square feet

Renaissance Academy exemplifies best practices in sustainable design and construction. The school features a geothermal mechanical system with well field, grey water collection system, a white roof with solar panels, and a living, green roof. Extensive use of natural light saves energy while enhancing the learning environment. Sustainable features are incorporated into the building as a teaching tool, allowing students to observe rainwater collection and reuse, mechanical system processes, and daylight monitors that automatically adjust lighting levels. The building was designed to LEED® Silver standards, but by working together as a team, the City of Virginia Beach, RRMM Architects, and W. M. Jordan Company achieved LEED Gold certification.
