W.M. Jordan Company

Intern Spotlight: Sam Bateman

August 4, 2017

Name: Sam Bateman

School: Virginia Tech

Assignment: Embassy Suites Wilmington

Intern Year: Fifth Year

Describe your duties: Subcontractor oversight/ coordination, creating BluBeam punch list, RFIs, submittals, scheduling, preparation for weekly subcontractor meetings, and anything else that gets the job going in the right direction.

How do your duties differ from previous years? This summer, I have gained a lot of knowledge on just how useful BluBeam can be in terms of communicating with subs and also updating any construction documents. I had never used BluBeam on a job before this summer. The Embassy Suites job is at its peak right now because there are so many trades on the job at once. This requires me to have knowledge of every system in the building so I am able to be there to help them along the way with any questions they may have. This is the largest job I have been on in my time at W.M. Jordan, which means more responsibility and awareness.

How has your internship impacted your studies? The tangible aspect of being on site has increased my ability to visualize a project when I am in the classroom. When I am able to visualize something in greater detail, it really helps me no matter where I am, whether that be in an office setting or on the site. It also motivates me in the classroom to see that there is a product at the end of the day that you worked hard to piece together.

What advice would you give to a first-year intern? Make the most of your experience. Don’t be scared to ask questions. The people at W.M. Jordan will help you along the way. This is a great opportunity for you to apply what you have seen in the classroom to what you see in the field. It really does come full circle when you apply both settings together.

Describe your favorite way to spend your time outside of working this summer: I really like to be at the beach no matter how sunny or cloudy it may be. I also enjoy golfing when I can.

Do you have any hidden talents most people don’t know about you? I cannot think of any hidden talents off the top of my head.

What’s the most daring thing you’ve done recently? Haven’t really done any daring things recently.

Where would you most want to live after college? Probably South/Southwest. Anywhere that doesn’t get too chilly and has some type of body of water near it.
