Justin-Waddy

Name: Justin Waddy

School: Virginia Tech

Assignment: Richmond Office – Estimating Department

Intern Year: Third Year

Describe your duties: I have been tasked with performing takeoffs using the OnScreen Takeoff software, assisting with material/labor cost estimates for GMPs, fielding and organizing cost estimates from subcontractors, and attending reconciliation meetings among other departmental duties.

How do your duties differ from previous years? Being an intern in the field in previous years, I was charged with safety regulation and trailer responsibilities, such as sending RFIs and submittals. Now, I have many more technical duties to fulfill each day: using software systems, meeting with owners, architects, and subcontractors, organizing reports, etc.

How has your internship impacted your studies? I didn’t know much about estimation procedures and personnel at first. Now, I have a stronger grasp of the concepts and processes that have been outlined in my studies but may have been a bit fuzzy.

What advice would you give to a first-year intern? Build relationships with whoever you can. This field of work is driven by relationships and it’s never too early to create those lasting connections.

Describe your favorite way to spend your time outside of working this summer: I’ve done lots of traveling this summer already, with more to come. I’ve been to Maryland, and I will be heading to Washington, D.C. and Orlando, Florida soon.

Do you have any hidden talents most people don’t know about you? I have always been an art lover and sometimes enjoy making my own pieces. I mostly use spray-paint with wood or glass, but I am looking to venture into alternative mediums soon.

Where would you most want to live after college? I have really come to enjoy the Richmond area and I am certain that I’d like to live here after college.
