Intern Spotlight: Justin Waddy

July 18, 2016

Justin Waddy

Name: Justin Waddy

School: Virginia Tech

Assignment: Science Museum of Virginia – Richmond, Virginia

Intern Year: 2nd Year

Describe your duties: I have been heavily involved with creating and completing punch lists, managing RFIs and ASIs, reviewing submittals, and safety monitoring. In the past month, I have attended several Owner/Architect/Contractor meetings, as well as managed a subcontractors meeting.

How does your internship fit into your long-term career goals?: I am developing skills in the field that are complementary to my Building Construction studies at Virginia Tech. Some aspects of the construction process that I have been introduced to in the classroom have more clarity in the field. With these skills, I am hopeful that I will become a project manager or superintendent in the near future.

If you are a returning intern, what advice would you give to a 1st year?: You already know so much more than you realize. Just stay focused, ask lots of questions, and don’t be afraid to jump right in.

Describe your favorite way to spend your time outside of working this summer: I have enjoyed exploring Richmond this summer. I have ventured to several art museums and galleries, as well as walking the campus of VCU. I also enjoy spending time with my family.

Tell us something interesting about yourself: I have a terrible, lifelong fear of heights that I have been chipping away at since last year’s internship. I feel that I am overcoming my fear as I am not as uneasy at great heights.
