Intern Spotlight: Jack Phillips

July 28, 2016

Name: Jack Phillips

School: University of Virginia

Assignment: Newport News Office Intern, Project Engineering

Intern Year: 3rd

Describe your duties: RFIs, Submittal Logs, O&M Manuals, Bluebeam

How does your internship fit into your long-term career goals?: Before I began interning, I did not think that I was cut out to study engineering and had plans to look elsewhere for a major. However after seeing how much I enjoyed the thought processes that went into a construction project, I knew for certain that I was built to follow through with an engineering major, regardless of how challenging it may be. So wherever my career takes me, I can thank this internship for allowing me to be there in the first place.

If you are a returning intern, what advice would you give to a 1st year?: I can safely say that I learned more new information during my first summer in the field as an intern than I have during any semester at school. So be as observant as possible- it will go a very long way.

Describe your favorite way to spend your time outside of working this summer: When I’m not working I try to stay active athletically and socially, along with spending as much time on the beach as I can!

Tell us something interesting about yourself: I transferred to UVA after spending my freshman year at the University of Georgia.
